Song of India
The Song of India plant is also called Pleomele. It is a member of
the Dracaena family and is native to the islands of the Indian Ocean.
The Song of India is especially common in Madagascar and Mauritius. The
plant is known for its rich, evergreen leaves and thick stems. The
leaves can get rather long and grow in tight whorls. The plant also has
small white flowers, which grow in clusters and usually bloom in mid
winter. When kept outdoors, the Song of India can reach roughly fifteen
feet in height. However, it is generally much smaller when grown as a
houseplant. Although it will not grow as tall, the Song of India tends
to thrive indoors and is exceptionally hardy.

Unlike many plants from tropical regions, the Song of India does not
require extensive light. In fact, it does not actually respond well to
direct sunlight exposure. Rather, it should be placed near a window or
in another area with filtered light. Additionally, the Song of India
should be provided with a moderate temperature of between 18 and 25
degrees Celsius. Although the plant should be watered regularly, the
Song of India will survive some lax in care and can handle infrequent
moisture. As for food, the plant should be fertilized every other week
for optimum growth. To propagate additional Song of India plants, you
can use stem cuttings, which allows this strong plant to be easily bred
by even amateur growers. |
