Polka Dot Plant
The official name of the polka dot plant is Hypoestes phyllostachya.
However, most people identify it by its unique spotted pattern. A native
of Madagascar, this exotic evergreen perennial is now a popular house
plant. Polka dot plants feature leaves of a deep green color splashed
with pink, white, or red spots. In some cases, even the plants’ stems
may have some unique coloring. However, the leaves grow in clusters that
cover most of the polka dot plant’s branches. Polka dot plants can
achieve a maximum height of three feet, making them a perfectly moderate
size for most homes.
A polka dot plant is a great choice for a home garden. It requires
minimal care and can thrive for many years. A loose, moisture-retaining
soil is best for planting. For example, a mix of regular potting soil,
sand, and peat will work well. Ideally, the polka dot plant should be
placed in an area with an average temperature between sixty and
eighty-five degrees Fahrenheit. It also requires high levels of
humidity, which can be produced with regular misting or by installing a
pebble bed beneath its pot. Polka dot plants should be placed in an area
with indirect sunlight, such as a south-facing window. They require
regular watering to ensure the soil stays moist and never dries out.
However, polka dot plants have no need for fertilizer, although some
growers recommend using a diluted food. To keep a healthy appearance,
the plant should be pruned regularly and checked for pests like
whiteflies.
